GDM
歴史
Graded Direct Method（GDM)とは、段階的直接法と訳される。提案者のI. A. Richardsは文芸批評家・論理学者・心理 学者・言語学者・教育理論家であり、いろいろの分野で活躍した人物であ る。彼はC. K. Ogdenとの共著 The Meaning of Meaningの研究成果であるBasic Englishを英語教育に利用することを試みた（Basic Englishはいわゆる基礎英語ではなくて、British American Scientific /International Commercialの頭文字で作られた固有名詞である）。彼は、中国で中国人 に英語を教えたが、良い結果を得ることができなかった。その反省から、少数の基本語を十分に使いこなすことで、どんな思想でも表現できるBasic Englishを英語教授へ利用することを考案して、1940年GDMとして発表した。（なお、以下の記述は『現代英語教授法総覧』大修館書店のGDMの項目を参考にしている）
特徴
そこでは、実物や絵、または場面で示すことができるような具体的な意味内容のものから教える。GDMの特徴の1つとして、母語を使わず、場面（situation)によって文（sentence)を学習するSEN-SITがあげられる。
Richards の意味論、ゲシュタルト心理学の成果が取り入れられている。これらに基づいて合理的に教材を配列することで、学習者が抵抗なく学習できる道筋をつくられている。ゲシュタルト心理学では、全体を重視するが、外国語学習でもセンテンスを単独で与えるのではなくて、意味あるsituation の中で与えると初めて意味を持ってくる。部分は全体の中で意味を持つという考えである。たとえば、ドレミファという音は単独では人に感動を与えないように、組み合わさり全体となって初めて音楽として人に感動を与える。そのような比喩が使われる。
さらに、学習者の創意、自発性の尊重なども特徴である。
• 学習者中心の教授法である。
• 学習者の学習負担が最小限になるように考慮されている。
• 学習者の創意、自発性を十分に尊重している。
これらが教授法の基本理念といえよう。
Basic English
1930年イギリスの心理学者オグデンによって、Basic English listが発表された。これがBasic Englishの誕生で ある。
BEは850語で普通のことならなんでも表現できるコンパクトな自然な英語である。人造語でも半人造語でもない。意味論研究の副産物として発見されたものである。1923 年に Ogden が Richards と一緒に The Meaning of Meaningを書いていたときdefinitionの章の所で語を定義していると、何度も定義語の中に同じ語が出てくるところから、英語の中に中核的な語彙があることを発見して、研究した結果考えられたのがBasic Englishである。
なお、Basic English は単なる850語からなる英語ではなくて、一つ一っの語が互いに有機的な関連性を持ち、一つの体系の中で位置づけられている。
また、Basic Englishは統計上のfrequency(頻度数）で選ばれたものではなくて、usefulness (有用性）という基準で選ばれているから、他の語で言い換え可能な語は省かれている。
Basic Englishの利点
初学者の入門期の英語として効果がある。
語数が少ないので徹底した訓練ができ、語彙増加の基礎をつくること ができる。
分析的に考えるのでclear thinkingの訓練になる。
言語のimage化が可能となる。（使われる動詞がvisibleなので視覚化しやすい）
Grading
いかなる教授法でもそれ相応のgrading(教材の配列)を持っている。一般的には難易度を基準にしたものが多いが、GDMのgradingはusefulness (有用性）という基準でつくられている。
Richardsによればgradingは単なるwordやsentence structureの積み重ねであってはならない。それは植物の成長に似て、一つの種子が根を張り、茎を伸ばし、枝を増し、葉や花を咲かせ、最後に実を結ぶように、成長して育っていくものでなくてはならない。そのためwordではwidely useful wordsから先に教えることになっている。
つまり、次のような順番である。
１ 生徒が自分の知識を発表するのにもっとも早く、広く、役に立つ語。
２ その語が次に来るinstructionの準備となるような語。
３ その語を使用して別の語を説明できるような語。
次にsentence structureのgradingは常に生徒が学習し易いように、負担が少なくなるように配慮して、次のように考えている。
１ 具体的でハッキリしたsituationを示すことができるsentenceから教える（RichardsはこれをSEN-SITと呼んでいる）。
２ 次に教えるSEN-SITの準備になるものから教える。
３ 次に教えるSEN-SITによって、前に教えたSEN-SITを一的確実に することができるように順序をたてる。
具体的な教授法
授業はすべて英語で行う。日本語は使用しない。
文型はすべて場面と結びつけて提示され学習される。（SEN-SIT)
授業の第1時間目からSpeaking、 Hearing、 Reading、 Writingの四技能を学習する。
GDMには教師にいくつかの制限が課せられている。例えばBasic Englishを使うとか、教師の話す英語の語彙や構文は生徒と同じにするとか、すべて授業は英語で行うなどである。その特徴であるDirectとGradingを十分に理解することが必要である。
