public speaking に慣れるにはどうすればいいのか。それには、show and tell activities が考えられる。Wikipedia には以下のような説明がある。
Show and tell is a common expression about showing an audience something and telling them about it. In the United Kingdom, North America, New Zealand and Australia, it is a common classroom activity at early elementary school. It is used to teach young children the skills of public speaking. For example, a child will bring an item from home and will explain to the class why they chose that particular item, where they got it, and other relevant information.
show and tell activitiesでは、写真や持ち物などの視覚教材を見せながら、説明をするのである。1人またはグループで行う。これは、元来は国語教育の一環として欧米の小学校で広く取り入れられてきた。
その特徴として、学習者自身が好きなこと、知っていることについて意見や考えを表現できること、学習者自身が話したい「もの」を手に持って示すことで、その場で聞き手を意識して英語を組み立てることができる、などである。まったく何もなしにpublic speaking するのは、かなりの表現力が要求されるのであり、学習者に取ってはかなりハードルが高い。手に持った物を説明するという形でプレゼンテーションをするのはやりやすい。（参考：私の授業でも、public speaking を行わせると、発表者は多くの場合、何かの絵が印刷された紙を提示しながら､行うことが多い。自然と発表者は自分がspeech しやすい方法を選んでいるようである）
話し手自身が視覚教材を選び、実生活に関する話題について話してゆく。その場合は、限られた語彙や表現を用いて発表するのであるが、その制限の中で、精一杯に内容を工夫したり、難易度を変えたりすることができる。
